GENESIS iGEM

About Us

GENESIS is a nonprofit-hosted, student-led research program.

GENESIS prepares a selective cohort of high school students to compete in iGEM, the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition. We are intentionally structured like a real research and development team, combining biology, modeling, design, outreach, and operations.

We are based in our local community and operate across multiple schools through nonprofit backing, not as a single-campus club.

Why We Exist

Access to real research.

Unlike university teams, high school iGEM teams often lack lab space, institutional funding, and continuity. GENESIS exists to close that gap with nonprofit support, external fundraising, and a long-term program structure that persists beyond a single class.

Responsible biology

We design with safety, ethics, and human practices in mind from the first sketch to the final prototype.

Interdisciplinary teams

Our members span biology, computer science, design, and strategy to build better ideas together.

Access and equity

We create pathways for high school students to access advanced research opportunities regardless of resources.

Team Structure

We operate like a startup research team.

GENESIS is not a school club. We function as an independent research and development program under Creative Odyssey, with roles spanning research, software, design, communication, and logistics.

Wet Lab

Builds and tests genetic constructs, assays, and biological prototypes.

Dry Lab

Models pathways, simulates systems, and runs computational analyses.

Human Practices

Connects with stakeholders and ensures our work is responsible and inclusive.

Design + Media

Creates visuals, storytelling, and outreach materials for the public.

Fundraising

Secures sponsorships and resources to keep the program sustainable.

Operations

Keeps schedules, protocols, and lab logistics running smoothly.
